Mayor Elizabeth Nelson is a graduate of Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Earth Science Education and a Master of Arts in Secondary Education from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.  She holds additional certification in Special Education, Supervision, Principalship and work toward a  PhD.  

After a successful career in public education Mayor Nelson jointed the Marlin Orientation and Assessment Unit for the Texas Youth Commission where she served as the Assistant Principal and coordinator of the Educational Assessment Department.  In 2001, she joined the staff of Texas A&M and was coordinator for a special project in the Jeffersonian Institute.  

During her educational career she served in many areas of leadership at the local and state levels.  In 2000, she was selected as one of 90 Texas women to be honored in Leadership Texas for outstanding lifetime achievements.  

In May 2004, she was elected to the Marlin City Council and was reelected an additional three terms.  During that time she served as Mayor ProTem three different times.  In 2011, Elizabeth Nelson became the Marlin Mayor, only the second woman to hold that office in its 145 year history.  

Mayor Nelson has a strong commitment to the community through education and its young people.  She was a founding member of the Falls County Boys and Girls Club and was one of several who were instrumental in securing a 1.8 million dollar grant to provide an After School Program for Marlin students.  She currently serves as a member of the Falls County Historical Commission, Marlin Rotary Club, Executive Committee of the Heart of Texas Council of Governments and the board of directors of the Economic Opportunity Advancement Corporation.  She previously served on the boards of The Marlin Library, Palace Theater, American Heart Association and the Criminal Justice Committee of the HOTCOG. 

Mayor Nelson has one son and two grandchildren.
